Bacon Jam

What is bacon jam? Bacon jam is a savory and sweet garnish made with bacon and caramelized onions. If you are from Memphis and have ever been to Flight or Southern Social – this is what they top their deviled eggs appetizer with. I have been making this to go with our deviled eggs for years and it is always a hit! Be sure to add this to your next Thanksgiving or Easter menu – everyone will love it. It comes together over stove top and is simple to make!

How to enjoy Bacon Jam

Bacon jam can be used as a garnish for so many things! Here are some of our favorite ways to enjoy it:

  • Deviled Eggs (our #1 favorite!)
  • Burgers
  • Chicken Sandwiches
  • Baked Brie
  • Over cream cheese to serve with crackers

How to store Bacon Jam

Bacon Jam can be stored in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. When serving, allow bacon jam to come to room temperature, or defrost in the microwave in 15 second increments, stirring frequently

Ingredients

  • 1 lb bacon (any kind, but I prefer thick cut)
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced (I use pre-minced, work smarter not harder)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  • Dice bacon into small pieces, cook over stovetop until bacon is moderately crispy, but do not burn 😉
  • Remove cooked bacon bits from pan. Remove bacon grease from pan – leaving about 1 tablespoon of grease in the pan to sauté onions
  • Dice onion and cook in bacon grease on low-medium heat until onions are caramelized. This will take approximately 15-20 minutes. Do not increase the heat too high, you don’t want to burn the onions. Caramelize these low and slow.
  • Add bacon back into the pan when onions are caramelized.
  • Add brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, and red pepper flakes to pan, stir until combined.
  • Cover pan, and simmer on low heat for 20 minutes until sugar is melted and jam is thick, sticky, and delicious.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste, then allow jam to cool before storing.
  • Jam can be stored in the refrigerator up to 2 weeks.
  • Enjoy!

As always – if you give this recipe a try I can’t wait to hear what you think!
