Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies

Any baking blog worth its salt will have a classic chocolate chip cookie recipe! And while I do consider myself to be an expert in the classic sugar cookie cutout, chocolate chip cookies have been a little more difficult for me to master. Part of this is because I love SO many types of chocolate chip cookies – chewy, soft, crispy, salty, rich, milky – I love them all! So it’s hard to decide what kind of chocolate chip cookie I want represented on this blog.

Because of this, I’ve made several variations – many of which are listed below! But this is my recipe for a classic chocolate chip cookie. You know the one – the go-to recipe you can make any time, for any holiday or celebration, and it will be loved by all.

My Must-Have Features for Chocolate Chip Cookies:

  • Chewy, with slightly crispy edges
  • Semi-sweet chocolate
  • Smaller cookies – I love a 2-3 bite cookie so that’s what I’ve created here.
  • Consistency – I want a cookie that turns out the same every time I make it. I’ve made these cookies several times now and it fits the bill!
  • Vanilla forward – I love a lot of vanilla in my chocolate chip cookies, that’s why this recipe calls for 1 TABLESPOON of vanilla! (not a typo!)

Other Chocolate Chip Cookie Variations:

This recipe creates a lovely, classic, and simple chocolate chip cookie. However, if you’re looking for a little variety be sure to give these other chocolate chip cookie recipes a try! Chocolate chip cookies are one of my favorite types of cookies to play around with in the kitchen!

Let’s get to baking these classic Chocolate Chip Cookies!

  • 3/4 cup of butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg, plus 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy
  3. Add in egg and vanilla, mix until combined
  4. In a separate bowl, combine all dry ingredients
  5. Slowly add the dry ingredients into the butter mixture, mix until just combined. Do not overmix!
  6. Fold in chocolate chips
  7. Scoop cookie dough onto baking sheet, bake cookies for 8 minutes. This bake time is for single scoop cookies. If you’re making larger cookies you may need to adjust your bake time to 11-13 minutes.
  8. Enjoy!

I agree that semi sweet is the only chocolate chip that belongs in a classic chocolate chip cookie! I’ve never used that much vanilla so will give that a try!
